FAQ

Protect PDF | PDFOnlineToolbox

Everything you need to know about PDFOnlineToolbox.

How does PDF protection work?

This tool encrypts your PDF with RC4 128-bit encryption (PDF Revision 3, PDF 1.4/1.5 standard). An /Encrypt dictionary is added to the PDF, and a password is required to open the document. The encryption is compatible with all major PDF readers including Adobe Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, and Firefox.

Is this the same as Adobe's password protection?

Yes. This tool uses the industry-standard PDF encryption standard (Revision 3, 128-bit RC4) that Adobe and other PDF readers support. When you open the protected PDF, the reader will prompt for the password before displaying the content.

Is my PDF safe?

Yes. All processing happens in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.

Can I remove the password later?

Yes. Use the Unlock PDF tool on this site and enter the password to remove the protection.

Browser-Based AES Encryption and Permission Control

Our protection tool applies industry-standard AES-128 or AES-256 bit encryption directly to document object streams within your browser sandbox. You can set user open passwords and restrict printing or editing permissions without exposing sensitive files to remote cloud servers.

Key Use Cases

  • Securing confidential financial statements and tax filings before email transmission
  • Protecting employee payroll records and HR documents with strong open passwords
  • Preventing unauthorized modification or copying of proprietary legal contracts

Privacy & Security Guarantee

Because this utility executes entirely within your web browser's local sandbox, your sensitive files are never uploaded to cloud servers, stored in temporary directories, or inspected by third-party logs. This ensures complete data confidentiality and compliance with privacy standards.
